In the K-pop industry, if someone debuted a year before you then they are your sunbaes. But the longer the distance of the debut then you would add -nim to their status. This post is about those groups that debuted 5-10 years ago and what they are doing currently. I will be listing groups I have never even heard of in this post, so my comments may be short. Also, this will end up being a 5-part post, which will be one post per year. Okay let’s get started….
(Korean: 천상지희 더 그레이스; hanja: 天上智喜 The Grace ) is a four-member South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment in 2005. The group consists of Lina, Dana, Sunday, and Stephanie. In 2011, they formed a sub-unit duo group The Grace – Dana & Sunday.
This group is actually really good. I wish I had found out about them sooner. I found a video from 5 years ago called, “My Everything”, which I am sharing below. From what I found out, they are no longer together as a group but they are still with SM Entertainment. They were last active in 2010, but their last album was released in 2009 in Japan. They had a number of music videos on their DVD, the last one being “Boomerang”. I found the Korean version. It’s a really good song and the video is okay. They had a subunit that released a single and music video, “One More Chance” in July of 2011. It’s an okay song, but I do wish they would have stayed together as a four member group.
(English pronunciation: /ˈdʌ.bəl ɛs faɪv oʊ wʌn/) is a South Korean boy band formed under the management of DSP Media, formerly known as Daesung Entertainment and DSP Entertainment. The group debuted on June 8, 2005 with five members:Kim Hyun-joong, Heo Young-saeng, Kim Kyu-jong, Park Jung-min and Kim Hyung-jun, along with their debut mini-album entitled Warning.
Although I’ve heard of this group, I think I may have only listened to just one song, which is a shame because as I was looking up their debut songs, I found that “Everything” is so beautiful that it is something I would really listen to a lot. And their debut single, “Warning” is pretty good as well. I liked the dancing in the music video but the song didn’t catch me the way that “Everything” did. The last album they released was in 2010 called “Destination” with a music video release for “Love ya”. It didn’t really catch my attention, but it is still a good song. The music video is so-so, but I do like the dancing. As of 2010 they are currently on Hiatus, which means that they’ll be back again. I hope that they come back strong and improved. (Also, I just happened to watch their “De Ja Vu” music video and I loved the dancing, but I also noticed one of the members say, “More than present” or something like that, and I only mention it because U-Kiss mentions it in two of their early music videos and it sounds like “Mordin Present”, and then I remembered that one of the early Members from U-Kiss has a brother in this group and that is why the group is familiar. That’s totally weird!!!)
(Korean: 가비엔제이) is a Korean pop ballad female trio that debuted in 2005 and which is currently signed to Goodfellas Entertainment. In 2006 Gavy NJ was included on the Goodberry Entertainment (their former label) 7 members project group “Gavy NJ Project Group H7 Miin”, renamed in 2010 to “H7 Miin Project The b”.
In early 2009, Jung Hye Min left the group and was replaced by Misty. On November 17, 2011, it was announced that Hee Young would leave the group after finishing the promotion of the digital single “Gaseyo”. In April, 2012, it was announced that Misty had also left, however two new members joined the group.
I have never heard of this group AT ALL and it is weird but they are still active. Their first release is “the very first” but they released a music video for “Snowman”. It wasn’t very interesting at all. I wanted the song to just play so I was getting ready to skip forward when the singing started and I was instantly captured. Even the single they just released this year in April, “Ju Ju Ju” captivated me from the beginning. However, I don’t care for the music video at all. But I’m glad they are still active. I will be looking up their other songs and music videos and adding them to my K-pop group list.
(Korean: 슈퍼주니어; Syupeo Junieo) is a South Korean boy band. Formed in 2005 by producer Lee Soo-manof S.M. Entertainment, the group comprised a total of thirteen members at its peak. Super Junior originally debuted with twelve members, consisting of leader Leeteuk, Heechul, Hankyung, Yesung, Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae,Siwon, Ryeowook and Kibum. Kyuhyun joined the group in 2006.
I heard of this group through Simon and Martina’s You Tube Channel “Eat Your Kimchi”….I think. But I do remember Lee Jun Ki singing their song, “Sorry, Sorry” during his drama, “Hero”, so I’m sure I heard it from Simon and Martina. But otherwise I didn’t know who they were until then. I have even seen many of their members in Korean dramas but I didn’t listen to their music too much until 2013. But even now it’s because of the dramas and also because of the variety show, “Running Man”, that I got to know the members; like Hee Chul, Siwon and so on. Some of my favorite songs are “Mamacita”, “Sexy, Free and Single” and “Mr. Simple”. I’m actually about to listen to their recent release from their album, “Devil”, for the first time for this post.
(파란) was a South Korean boyband formed by NH Media in 2005. The five members of the band had been living together for 2 years while being trained in singing and dancing. Being fluent in English and Japanese, the band has targeted for overseas markets from debut. Also, all the members have been trained in all areas of musical production from chorus, dubbing to sub-producing. The group unofficially disbanded after members had left for the army and Ryan and Ace released solo singles along with AJ joining U-KISS.
I actually only heard of this group because of U-Kiss, only because they joined them in one of their songs from the “Neverland” album and it’s also one of my favorite songs. So I’m not really familiar with this group at all. Even reading the info above had me shocked that they were still active for 6 years. AJ joined U-KISS in 2008 and Neverland was released in 2011, so maybe that was the last thing they worked on…I don’t know. But from their early releases it seems that they could have still made it in the industry even without AJ.
